23 May 2013, Bekkinakeri Village, Karnataka, India: Geeta Bhogan (23) with her daughter Renuka at the family home in Bekkinakeri Village that she shares with family members and five cows. Eight months pregnant ,she says water collection took up a great deal of time and effort costing lost opportunity to get ahead. Since the installation of a tap one year ago she says her life has changed for the better. The family have paid 7000 rupees to have a toilet installed and since then she says their hygiene has improved greatly. The World Bank Rural Water Supply and Sanitation project (RWSS) is helping the villagers of Bekkinakeri Village who have faced an acute shortage of drinking water. Many have had to travel up to 2km to a well outside the village to get access to clean water. The result is water collection takes away time that could be better spent earning wages or working the fields. Now taps have been installed outside peoples homes and for two hours each day the residents are able to get all they need. As well as water supply the project focuses on supply of toilets to people who have always defecated in the open. The aim has been to reduce hygiene issues and improve lives and residents are embracing the opportunities offered by the Bank projects. Picture by Graham Crouch/World Bank
